Represent your city and help advance science for the 10th year of this global competition to document urban biodiversity. The City Nature Challenge is one of the biggest annual events in citizen science, over 100 cities across 6 continents are set to take part in the project this year. The BioBlitz takes place in two parts: Making Observations and Uploading + Identifying.
Part 1: April 24-27, 2026
Participants will take pictures documenting plants, animals, and any other organisms they find residing in urban areas. All organisms must be wild, meaning they weren’t intentionally introduced nor taken care of by humans. Be sure to make notes about the location and any relevant details you may notice, such as what an animal is feeding on or the measurement of a footprint that was found.
Part 2: April 28 - May 10, 2026
Use the iNaturalist app or website to upload your observations. You’re welcome to join your city’s project but it’s not a must, all observations made during the window of part one (April 24-27) will automatically get pulled into the project. Is your city not participating? No worries, anyone can partake by joining in the global project. This is also the time for identifying the observations made, something that everyone is able to participate in, no expertise required.
Results are to be announced on May 13, 2026!
Join your fellow ecology experts and amateurs in making this the biggest year yet!
